COACH John Carson insisted he was pleased with the Highland under-18s’ performance – despite a heavy defeat to Stirling County.

They lost 36-0 at home to the Conference League leaders, who are undefeated in the campaign.

"Although I am really disappointed to lose, I am quite pleased with the performance," said Carson.

"In the first half we had 80 per cent of the possession and territory.

"But we butchered three really good opportunities in the first half, while Stirling had one and scored.

"They were far more clinical than us and they’re very well drilled."

He added: "We lost an early try in the second half and every opportunity after that they finished off, which we didn’t in that first half."

Meanwhile, the first-team return to competitive action with a trip to Glasgow’s south side and a cup collision against Whitecraigs.

Highland tackle their opponents in the BT National League Cup with the chance of an upset on the cards.

Whitecraigs are in the BT National League Division Two, but have been struggling at the bottom with just 10 points from nine games.

They may be a division above Highland, but Whitecraigs have just one league win this term.

And Carson said: "We have got a good chance, but we’ll see what happens on the day."

Elsewhere on Saturday, Stirling County were also victorious at different age levels against Highland.

Their under-16s lost 30-10, the under-15s crashed 50-0; the under-14s went down 22-10 and the under-13s lost 15-5.

Highland under-18s, meanwhile, travel to Boroughmuir on Saturday and Carson said: "That will be a good fixture. They gave us a good game earlier and we are going to make a day of it and watch Scotland play New Zealand afterwards."

The second team take on Garioch in the Caledonia Division Two North.

The match was rescheduled from late August when Garioch were unable to field a team.
