A MAN who died in a tragic car accident has been named by police.
Evan Cameron (63) from Millerton View, Kinmylies, was the driver and sole occupant of a Volvo V50 which came off the B9176 Struie road near Ardgay at around 3.30pm on Tuesday.
Police said the road was closed to allow for a collision investigation to take place, and it remained closed for structural examinations of a bridge on the route yesterday.
East Sutherland and Edderton Independent councillor Jim McGillivray said it was a hazardous stretch for drivers.
"That road is a necessary evil," he said.
"It’s very well-used because it cuts off the Easter Ross loop for people who are heading to the west coast.
"It’s a bit of road which I use regularly to cut off the A9. Loggers and HGVs use it, it’s a very busy stretch of road and it’s also a very difficult stretch.
"It can only be taken at low speed and low gears because it’s turn after turn after turn.
"It’s a bit like a mini Berriedale, there’s not much can be done to improve it because of the sheer geography.
"The road actually hangs to the side of the hill. But I don’t think there are that many accidents, or not that I am aware of.
"People who know the road and know the difficulties tend to adapt their driving accordingly."
He added: "This is an awful tragedy and I would like to extend my fullest sympathies to the family and all involved. It’s a tragic accident, it’s very unfortunate and my thoughts are with them all."
Road policing officer Constable Kate Park said: "Our thoughts go out to the family of the driver who has sadly died in this collision.
"I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the collision, and who has not yet spoken to police to contact us on 101 and quote reference number NE/3995/18."
