WHEN rock DJs Debra (Banshee, Manchester) and Archangel Scream (Spiders, Hull) moved to the Highlands for the quiet life, they found life - a bit too quiet!

Archangel aka Brian Turner explained: "I met Debra randomly at a production of the Rocky Horror Show in Nairn Community Hall. Debra has quite a pedigree as she played at the Banshee in Manchester through the 80s and 90s - the premier goth club there. I was surprised when I found there wasn't really a regular rock night I could go to. I've got young children, so when I get the chance to go out, though there were loads of live bands, I couldn't find a regular rock night - so with Debra, I started looking at doing one ourselves. "But it's taken more organising than we expected!" The duo have decided to cater for two different age groups in the one night, starting next Saturday (Jan 16). Brian said: "We decided to have two separate events on the same night as some of the younger people we spoke to said they'd love to come along, but were under 18. So we're running the first part for under 18s from 6pm to 9pm, and then the second part of the night is for over 18s." The second part of the night set to run at the Ironworks on the third Saturday of every month, sees over-18s welcome from 10pm to 3am. "We've got different music for each part. We've got music from 250 bands put together now to cover as much of the whole spectrum of rock as we can." Playing metal, indie, goth, punk, emo, and classic rock, they'll be playing new and old for all tastes and ages. "We'll play bands like Kasabian, Kings Of Leon to the Kaiser Chiefs as well as retro Pixies," said Brian. "And no-one needs to worry that they have to go there and listen to five hours of thrash metal." The new night is branded as Alternative X and Brian and Debra are celebrating the launch by serving up 10 Muse Resistance albums as prizes. Brian said: "We aim to play a wide selection of music to entertain as many people as possible. It doesn't matter whether you prefer general rock or indie, thrash or punk, emo or industrial, we aim to have something for everyone with an alternative ear in music." The planned dates for 2010 start next Saturday (January 16). Under-18s tickets will be £4 or £5 on door, over-18s tickets will be £5 or £7 on the door. For your chance to win one of the 10 Resistance albums up for grabs, name the lead singer of Muse. Entries need to be with us by January 11 at 5pm.
