THE three week salmon fishing season extension is now over and, as far as I know, there have been mixed results with both sea-liced fresh fish and an assortment of kippers caught.

On the Inverness Angling Club stretch some 17 fish were taken ranging from grilse of around three pounds to sizeable salmon running into the teens. Quite a high percentage of the fish were bars of silver.

With only a handful of anglers taking advantage of the extension, it's interesting to surmise just how many fish would have been caught had there been no restriction on the number of rods allowed out.

Gordie Armstrong at Ness Castle ended up with nine for the week up to October 31 on the fly, two of which were sea liced and four fish that would be classed as fresh.

They also lost a number of fish, when there appeared to be runs of fresh grilse running through.

Winners of the Ness District Fishery Board draw for people returning salmon caught on the Ness system during October were - Mr Armit, who caught and returned a 4lb grilse at Ness-castle and wins a £30 tackle voucher for Grahams; Ian Henderson who returned a fish of 5lbs at Dochfour wins a Ness conservation fleece; Nigel Kaka returned a grilse of 4lbs at Ness-side winning a side of smoked salmon.

Neil McLaughlin, who caught and returned an 8lb salmon at Ness-castle wins a bottle of whisky.

And in the draw exclusively for the Inverness Angling Club water - Chris Bruce, who turned a grilse of 4lbs at the Braes wins a tackle voucher for Grahams.

Alva Parkes wins a fly box and flies for returning a 9lb salmon on the MacIntyre Pool.

Dave Stewart returned a grilse of 6lbs from the Provens and wins a side of smoked salmon.

Peter Easton returned an 8.5lb salmon on the MacIntyre pool and wins a bottle of whisky.

Thanks to Grahams, the Ness District Salmon Fishery Board, Edinburgh smoked salmon, Graham Mackenzie and the Inverness Angling Club for helping sponsor the draw.

On the trout scene, the last 10 days of October produced some good sport at Achagour Fishery, near Nairn (01309 651259), with the honour of catching most fish going to R Maslin, with 42.

Best fish was a 7lb 10oz rainbow landed by S MacGillivray who netted 17 fish during his short visit.

W Orrock had a nice fish of 5lb 4oz, D Christie, 5lb 2oz, S McKenzie, 4lb 9oz, J Gardiner 4lb 2oz and K Moss, 4lb.

Other bags of note included W Hunt and D Campbell with 16, D Christie and R Mackay 14, S Cowan, 12, W Shewan, R Anderson, J Gardiner and J Patience on 11, and with 10, M Fenion and I Whiteside.

Buzzers, Black Beetles, Red Tag, Fritz, Cats Whisker, Muddlers, Blobs, Diawl Bach, Cormorant, Montana, Bibio, Snatchers, PTN, various lures and even "late" dry fly tactics have all accounted for fish, primarily rainbows but also some nicely conditioned blues. LAF
