I DISCOVERED an article about a John Fraser among my late mother's papers with a note explaining that he was her great-grandfather and therefore my great-great-grandfather.

The History of Guisachan by Donald Fraser mentions John Fraser Brewer and relates the story of his illicit stills and his exploits in avoiding the excise men, exactly as my grandmother Johanna Mackenzie (Fraser) told me as a child 70 years ago.
