AN autistic Inverness teenager has beaten off competition from thousands of other talented performers to be ranked as one of the top 100 new musicians in the UK.

Kane Carroll (17), from Merkinch, writes, records and produces his own rap videos for his YouTube channel, TistikTV.

He is now in the running to win a £50,000 prize in the newly launched Salute UK music competition.

Kane says he is on a mission to inspire other young people in the area and his album 5K Yesterdays: The Journal, tells the story of his life as an autistic teenager in the Highlands.

"It is about my autism mostly," he said. "I just spread my emotions on it. I really do pour my heart out into my music."

His rap name, Tistik, reflects his commitment to autism awareness.

"I aspire to speak to other autistic children and to help them, but also kids that aren’t autistic," he said.

"I want people to relate to me and my music and if they have been through something tough I want them to think that maybe it will be OK. They are not alone."

Kane submitted a selection of his songs to Salute UK and is currently in sixth place out of 100 entries, based on online votes.

If he remains in that position or higher when the competition closes at the end of the month he will win £10,000 to invest in new music equipment.

He will then have the chance to compete for a further £40,000 in a fresh round of voting between himself and what would be his five remaining rivals.

Kane accepts that his music uses some strong language and is not to everyone’s taste, but added: "I want to reach out to people and I want to grow, I want people to listen to me and hear what I have to say.

"I know it sounds corny but I want to change lives so badly."
