A COUNCIL gritter has been called into action to clean up a one-mile oil spill on the A939 Nairn-Grantown road.
A police warning was issued at 11am this morning after the spill was discovered just beyond the Highland Council recycling centre, heading towards Grantown.
As a result, Highland Council's roads maintenance department sent out gritters usually reserved for snow and ice to spread sand on the slippery road.
A council spokeswoman said: "Washing it off is not the recommended way of dealing with oil spills – especially in the wet weather.
"Putting sand on the spill and putting up warning signs is the best method in such conditions."
