Budget way to head outdoors

IF you're of a certain age, the word "hostel" will probably conjure up images of rather spartan facilities, lots of rules to follow, chores to do and communal dormitories where it was impossible to avoid the guy a few beds down snoring his head off while you were trying to get some shut-eye.

But these days hostels have changed in a big way, and as well as the familiar chain of Scottish Youth Hostels Association premises in Scotland, numerous privately-run places have sprung up.

They all aim to cater for the burgeoning number of people seeking reasonably-priced accommodation that allows them to spend time in the outdoors.

Given a five-star rating by VisitScotland, the BCC (standing for Bearnock Country Centre) Loch Ness Hostel sits in a lovely rural location between Drumnadrochit and Cannich, about half an hour by car from Inverness.

Part of an independent network covering the whole of Britain, it provides modern, chalet-style accommodation for individuals, families and groups.

The rooms are spacious and have en suite showers to wash away the grime of the day. While fairly basic, there's plenty of storage space and they are perfectly adequate. My only complaint is that two pillows on the bed would have made life that bit more comfortable.

The kitchen facilities such as cookers, fridges and cupboards are shared, which takes a bit of getting used to if you're new to this sort of thing.

But it gives you the chance to strike up conversations and get to know other hostellers, who can come from anywhere in the world. It all adds colour to the experience.

Of course, the majority of people who stay at the BCC hostel are there for the great outdoors and there's walking, fishing and kayaking all within easy reach.

The glens of Affric, Strathfarrar and Cannich are just a short drive away, giving access to some wonderful mountain scenery. This hostel is the perfect base to visit them and a warm haven to return to after the day's exertions when you can swap tales of the day's experiences with fellow guests. PE
