The saga of the camera in the nestbox continues. Readers may recall that the two blue tits that had successfully laid eggs on the nestbox with a miniature camera inside were predated by the male sparrowhawk that hunts through the paddock.

A handsome male mandarin duck hanging around the nestbox as if guarding it. I HAVE never given much consideration to polygyny in birds, where in a breeding system a male regularly mates with two or more females. The first time I came across this behaviour was when a warden of a National Nature Reserve in the Highlands rang to say that he had proved that one male golden eagle was paired up with two females.
